But is it culture, genetics or the environment that drives such a choice—and is there an optimal age difference? New research shows that, at least for the Sami people of preindustrial Finland, men should marry a woman almost 15 years their junior to maximize their chances of having the most offspring that survive. Yet, only 10 percent of these marriages were between men and women with that optimal age difference. The span ranged from men marrying women as much as 20 years older to women marrying men as much as 25 years older; the average age difference between husband and wife was three years. Marriage customs or the availability of reindeer to support a new family the Sami people are reindeer herders might be the reason that more Sami marriages did not display the optimum age difference, Helle says. Ultimately, it is the age at which the woman begins bearing children that is the biggest factor in survival, the paper in Biology Letters suggests: Younger women, in general, bear more healthy children.

Sir David has been on our screens so long that he has become a unique national institution. But there is another man who, remarkably, did just as much to popularise natural history during his lifetime — Gilbert White, a vicar from deepest Hampshire. Captivated by his surroundings, White spent 25 years studying and recording plant and animal species and how they changed year by year, resulting in his book The Natural History And Antiquities Of Selborne, published in At a glance Location: White believed in studying living birds and animals in their natural habitat, which was an unusual approach at the time, as most naturalists preferred to carry out detailed examinations of dead specimens in the comfort of their studies.
He was the first to distinguish the chiffchaff, willow warbler and wood warbler as three separate species, largely on the basis of their different songs, and the first to describe accurately the harvest mouse and the noctule bat. Sir David has become a national institution. There is also a considerable coach house, part of which is currently used as a gym. It provides garaging, storage, stabling, a hayloft and open store.

Though not native to Hawaii, these birds may help spread the seeds of threatened Hawaiian plants. They may appear healthy for centuries, but eventually they will fall — and then their lineage will vanish. One reason for their dire fate: The animals some such trees rely on to disperse their seeds are making fewer and fewer visits.
Plainly, we must soon cease to treat the parks as commons or they will be of no value anyone.
Continue reading the main story In contrast with some other at-risk species, perhaps sea turtles have been easier to manage because their threats are more tangible: They are accidentally trapped by fishermen or harvested by others as delicacies, aphrodisiacs or decoration. In the most extreme cases, like in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, nearly all female green turtles at one point had been exported for turtle soup. But conservation efforts there dating back to the s made an impact, and protecting beaches, regulating fishing and establishing marine protected areas have helped save turtles in many locations.
Photo The scientists found that even small populations of turtles have a chance of survival. Detecting whether a juvenile sea turtle survives long enough to make babies can take 10 to 30 years while it matures. They were surprised to find that with adequate protection, even small populations of turtles have a chance of survival. In an area called French Frigate Shoals in Hawaii, for example, green sea turtles increased nest numbers from around in , when the Endangered Species Act was signed, to around 2, in Yet research is still lacking.
For all sea turtles, most male to female ratios are unknown, which is an important aspect of reproduction and appears to be altered with increasing sand temperatures, skewing births toward more females.

He demonstrated an early interest in flora and fauna and a basic understanding of the scientific method. In , at the age of 15, he wrote a letter to the Entomological Record and Journal of Variation about a grasshopper he had seen swimming in a pond. He described an experiment he performed on the insect and included it for taxonomic identification.
In , Hutchinson earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from Emmanuel College at Cambridge University , where he was a founding member of the Biological Tea Club. He then served as an international education fellow at the Stazione Zoologica in Naples from until , when he was hired as a senior lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He was apparently fired from this position two years later by administrators who never imagined that in the university would honor the ecologist by establishing a research laboratory in his name. Hutchinson earned his master’s degree from Emmanuel College in absentia in and applied to Yale University for a fellowship so he could pursue a doctoral degree. He was instead appointed to the faculty as a zoology instructor.
He was promoted to assistant professor in and became an associate professor in , the year he obtained his United States citizenship. He was made a full professor of zoology in , and between and he served as director of graduate studies in zoology. Hutchinson never did receive his doctoral degree, though he amassed an impressive collection of honorary degrees during his lifetime.

You have to give a guy an opening, and make yourself available. I want my approach to appear to be well-timed , and I don’t like it when I feel like I’m interrupting. Sometimes the situation lends itself to an approach: Pay attention to your actions when you’re out. If you want guys to approach you, are you making it easy on them — are you “available”?
Some girls might want the guy to “work” as part of the approach, but for every one of you who makes it tough for a guy to approach, there are women who make it easier to approach that a guy might go for instead. Here are a few things women do that prevent guys from approaching them: It’s tough enough to walk up to one girl, let alone a group. Most guys will give it the old college try though.

Wood anemone Studland Wood with ramsons – Dorset Ancient woodland and the ancient trees it often contains are a valuable biodiversity resource both for diversity of species and for its longevity as woodland. Once lost ancient woodland cannot be recreated. A traditional method of managing woodland was coppicing.

Bear fishing in September. This year, Mashable is getting in on the salmon-munching action. Check back with us all week as we follow the fat bear face-offs each day, and remember to get your votes in for each round. Over the course of just three hours in late June, ecologist Mike Fitz stood atop a bear viewing platform in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and watched Bear , a dominant male, consume 15 whole salmon. Fitz has now endorsed Bear as Fat Bear Week’s fattest bear and believes the titanic animal — whose belly is nearly dragging on the ground — is likely to prove victorious in the Fat Bear Week bracket over such formidable contenders as Bear , a three-time champion.
We’re entering the last few weeks of weight gain before Fat Bear Week commences. Here’s a look at foreground and background. Which bear seems to have gained the most weight so far this season? It’s normal for bears to exhibit hyperphagia, or excessive hunger, during the summer months. This is almost certainly an advantageous adaption as brown bears must live off their stored body fat during the long winter famine.
But has taken it to the extreme. According to Fitz, who spent the summer in Katmai documenting bear activity, arrived at the salmon-rich Brooks River on June 25, “and he never left for very long. But this year was starkly different.

Tule elks at Pt. Meanwhile, ranchers are complaining about the free-range elk getting on their land and eating grass and drinking water intended for their dairy cattle and other agricultural operations. Because infection with Mycobacterium avium subsp. One of 10 cases had histopathologic lesions consistent with Mptb infection. The number of tule elk found to be infected was unexpected, both because of the continued overall health of the source herd and the normal clinical status of all study animals.
Elk were examined post-mortem, and tissue and fecal samples were submitted for radiometric mycobacterial culture. Acid-fast isolates were identified by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction PCR that discriminates among members of the Mycobacterium avium complex MAC. In addition, fecal samples from tule elk remaining in the herd were collected from the ground and submitted for radiometric mycobacterial culture.
No gross lesions were detected in any of the hunter-killed animals. One or more isolates of Mycobacterium avium subsp. No significant associations were found between MAC infection and sex or histopathologic lesions. Funding for tule elk projects has come from a variety of sources. During the second phase of the contraceptive research project, the first vaccine will be administered by direct syringe injection.
To administer the injection, 30 elk will be captured from a helicopter and hobbled by ground crews.
When talking about his volcanology career, Robert Tilling states that “the present is the key to the past – In a sense, we’re detectives, trying to decipher clues that rocks tell us. There are new things waiting to be discovered constantly and a scientists’ application of these discoveries to everyday life is never-ending. Richard Fiske probably states it best when he says, “Once you get started in volcanoes, you become a junkie.

We had only met by email up till then and he wanted to broach this sensitive subject in person. At the center of the storm was a tiny clam: Handful of Arctica islandica. There were even crazy stories about me clubbing and shucking them overboard.
It took some coverage from National Geographic and other good journalists to set the record straight. We both wanted to focus on the science and get any distractions out of the way. History Written in Rings The living Arctica islandica Wanamaker and colleagues had identified was over years old. Like tree dating dendrochronology , the science of sclerochronology matches rings — in this case shell rings — among individuals to establish accurate ages.
And like dendrochronology, sclerochronology is accurate to the single year, not decades or centuries like ice cores and geologic strata. A key study Wanamaker and colleagues published in showed it could be done: Scientists see entire biographies in these annual growth bands, much like tree rings or ice cores, and they are able to discern lean years from fat years and icy from warm.
But the team reads more than just growth bands.

An implicit and almost universal assumption of discussions published in professional and semipopular scientific journals is that the problem under discussion has a technical solution.
